We happened upon an article on The Trust Advisor website recently that is definitely attention-getting for anyone who is interested in estate planning.
Reality television is all the rage, and just about everyone is getting in on the act. Pawnbrokers, restauranteurs, restorers of antiques, auction hounds and others are capturing the imaginations of viewers on a regular basis.
Now it looks as though members of well-to-do families who are involved in estate disputes will be featured on the air. According to The Trust Advisor a show is in the works that is being called Will Wars.
This reality series will allow people who are involved in feuds to speak their minds and make their cases. If things go well an agreement will be reached on the show and the dispute will be settled. If not, the audience will still be entertained.
Estate disputes may make for interesting TV, but in real life they are something that you try to avoid when you are planning your estate. Nobody wants to leave behind a family torn apart over money. With proper planning hard feelings and acrimony can oftentimes be avoided.
However, you are free to plan your estate in any way that you wish. This includes making choices that may be difficult for one or more of your family members to accept.
If you think that your wishes will not be well-received in some quarters you should certainly communicate this to your estate planning lawyer. If you don’t share relevant information a surprise estate challenge could arise after you pass away, and your family may wind up airing out its laundry on reality TV.
